EDGEWATER, N.J. — Mellie Stasko of Edgewater was happiest when she was holding a guitar.

The 8-year-old -- who was killed along with her mother, Melissa Stasko, by her father in their condo last December -- often strummed along in lessons at the borough library.

A group of moms from town united following last December's slayings to honor the youngster by donating guitars to the library.

They recently found a picture of a horse that Mellie drew, which one of them said she hopes could adorn the guitars.

"Mellie was a real lover of music and it's a real testament to the life that she lived," program organizer Iris Tirri told Daily Voice. "Whenever a child picks up a guitar they'll do something that this little girl was able to do and that’s carrying on the memory of her life.”

Mellie's drawing is a preliminary proof of the decals that could be considered for the guitars.

The instruments — two full-sized and six medium — will be available to children and adults participating in the library's free guitar class.

Tirri hopes that they'll be ready by September.

More than $3,700 had been raised on a GoFundMe site for the guitars as of Thursday evening.
