The crash occurred at 11:53 p.m. on Thursday on the NJ Turnpike, northbound inner roadway in East Windsor Township, according to Sgt. Lawrence Peele, a spokesman with the New Jersey State Police.

Preliminary information indicates that in the area of milepost 66.8, a Lincoln Town Car was involved in a crash and was disabled in the roadway, Peele said.

A Jeep Cherokee traveling northbound then struck the disabled Lincoln, Peele said.

Two rear-seat passengers of the Lincoln were pronounced dead at the scene, Peele said.

The driver and front passenger in the Lincoln sustained serious injuries, he said.

The driver of the Jeep sustained minor injuries, according to Peele.

No other details, including names of the deceased passengers, had been released.

The inner roadway was closed for approximately six hours on Friday, Peele said.

The crash remains under investigation.
