BERGENFIELD, N.J. -- Love Zumba or ever wanted to try it? There’s a perfect opportunity to get on your feet with the fitness phenomena, have some fun and help some Bergenfield High School students while you’re at it tonight at the high school.

The fundraising event is the brainchild of Anna Papageorgiou, 32, of Pearl River, NY, who coaches the school’s 15-member dance team and is the advisor of the class of 2020, which has a student body of about 300. She previously organized fundraisers for the team and the class of 2016, for which she was the advisor, as well as numerous community events to raise money and awareness for cancer research.

Papageorgiou, who teaches English, special education and journalism, said the Zumba class at BHS was first started to benefit the dance team and then became a joint fundraiser two years ago due to the availability of the gym and the volunteer instructors.

The money will be used for dance team expenses, as well as money for the prom, such as a DJ or a photo booth.

The event, which is open to the public, starts at 7 p.m, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $3 in advance for kids and $5 at the door; $8 in advance for adults and $10 at the door.

There will be various types of rhythms being taught over the course of an hour. “The choreography is supposed to be easy enough so that anyone can follow,” said Papageorgiou, who has taught at BHS since 2011.

“It’s all about doing what’s best for the kids. We’re doing it to put the kids first.”
