BERGENFIELD, N.J. — Franz Gloria, a Roy Brown Middle School sixth-grader, won first prize from Bergenfield VFW Memorial Post 6467 in the annual Patriot’s Pen essay contest.

Sixth-grader Sarthak Gandotra placed third in the competition. Both wrote essays on what freedom means to them.

Nationwide, more than 131,000 students in grades six to eight submit essays to the competition. Every year, Patriot’s Pen gives students the opportunity to express their views on some patriotic theme.

Local winners are eligible to compete at the state and national levels.
