BERGENFIELD, N.J. -- After scoring perfect in two of the three WordMasters Challenge meets Bergenfield seventh-grader Amal Yazeji has achieved Highest Honors at the national level.
She finished the year with a combined score of 58 out of a possible 60.
This places her in a tie for third place among all students across the country in her grade level.
This is particularly impressive because she competes in the Gold Division, which is reserved for students who have "superior language skills" (such as those in Gifted and Talented programs).
The WordMasters Challenge is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships. Working to solve the analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically.
