When Will People Learn? Wayne PD: 10 Unlocked Vehicles Burglarized, Three Stolen, One Crashed

Wayne police nabbed two members of a crew of Newark car thieves who they said stole three unlocked vehicles – crashing one of them – and rummaged through nearly a dozen others before dawn Tuesday.

Several residents called police around 1:40 a.m. to report cars either being stolen or burglarized along MacDonald Drive, Stonycroft Road, White Oak Lane and Hamilton Avenue, Detective Capt. Laurence Martin said.

Home security devices also captured suspects ringing doorbells and then fleeing, he said.

Ten vehicles in all had items taken, Martin said. All of them weren’t locked, he said.

As police converged, Officer Luciano Blumetti stopped a car and arrested two suspects – identified as Jaquan Foster, 20, and Naquis Green, 19, both of Newark, the captain said.

They reeked of marijuana and were carrying four Xanax tablets in a prescription bottle with the patient’s name removed from the label, he said.

They also had a woman’s wallet stolen from an unlocked vehicle and an apparently stolen key fob belonging to a Jeep that police were trying to track down, Martin said.

The thief who crashed one of the stolen vehicles in Wayne fled on foot, Martin said.

Newark police found the other two stolen vehicles unoccupied, he said.

Both Foster -- who Martin said didn’t have a driver’ license -- and Green were released pending court action on charges that include receiving stolen property and possession of burglary tools and prescription drugs.

“Again, victims appear to have left their cars unlocked with the electronic key fobs in the vehicle, along with accessible personal items,” the captain said.

“We need the public’s help in minimally locking their vehicles and removing their personal items from view,” he said.
