The Sept. 27 event, at the New York Country Club in Ramapo, "will honor Brian's legacy and help support" his widow, Gina, and their children, Jack, Ryan and Meghan, organizers said.
All of the money raised will go toward the recently created Brian Long Memorial Foundation, Inc., which is exempt from federal income tax under IRC Section 501(c)(3), they said.
Originally from Bergenfield, Long worked for the NYPD before transferring to New Milford in 1994.
Long, 45, valiantly battled the uncommon disease -- even returning to work -- before succumbing to aggressive renal cell carcinoma.
Those who knew him described the Park Ridge resident as "an awesome person, officer and father" whose "courage, tenacity and dedication were always on display."
"He would do anything for anyone," Bogota Sgt. Geoffrey Cole told Daily Voice.
"It was his selflessness and caring nature towards friends and family that defined the man," said Tom McConville of Park Ridge, one of the organizers. "That’s because Brian made time. To be at games and events. To enjoy a day on the lake. To be there for Gina and the kids at every turn.
"To spend just a few minutes with Brian Long was to know that it was family first no matter what. And that’s more than just time well spent. That’s a life well-lived."
Co-organizer John Walsh, whose 8-year-old daughter is best friends with Meghan, said the outing is "a great way to bring people together and remember Brian. It also gives his kids something to look forward to each year."
Besides aiming to make the outing an annual event foundation committee members are considering making a donation each year to a Park Ridge youngster.
"Park Ridge is a small town that pulls together in moments like these," said Walsh, who has organized previous golf outings after deaths in his own family.
The event in New Hempstead, N.Y., will begin with registration and a buffet barbecue lunch at 11 a.m., followed by a noon shotgun start.
An open bar will be available between 6-7 p.m., with dinner from 7-9 p.m.
(NOTE: "Dinner-only" guests should plan on arriving at 6 p.m. to take advantage of the happy hour. Attire is casual.)
Prizes will be awarded for 1st- and 2nd-place winners, longest drive and closest to pin.
There will also be a tricky tray, a silent auction and a 50/50.
Registration:
- $225 per golfer and/or $900 a foursome;
