DUMONT, N.J. -- Benjamin J. Verga, 95, of Dumont, passed away at home Jan. 29, 2016 surrounded by family.
He was predeceased by his parents Vincent and Rosalia Verga; and siblings Philip Verga, Carolyn and Author Montanaro, Mary and Salvatore Marino, Consetta and Joseph Di Lenardo and Salvatore.
He was the husband of Dorothea Verga; father of Joseph and Judith Verga, Edward and Elizabeth Verga, Isabelle Verga Driscoll, Lillian and the late Joseph Graviano, Charles and Karen Verga, Dorothy Verga and the late James Edward Verga; brother of Rose Verga; grandfather of Jeffrey and Shana Verga, Joseph and Janet Verga, Jill and Daniel Tabor, Brian Verga, Alison Verga, Eve and Mario Valente, Nicholas Graviano, Benjamin Graviano and Ana Mendez, Nicholas, Kevin, Jack and Julia Verga; great-grandfather of Jake, Zack, Connor, Cole, Kianna, Aidan, Kateri, Joseph, Cecilia, Noah, James, Michael and Nina; brother-in-law of Charles and Linda Van Zandt and Michael and Carol Van Zandt.
He was born and raised in Jersey City, served in the North African and Italian campaigns during World War II, graduated from City College of New York and worked for U.S. Customs until he retired in 1980.
He will be remembered for his simple humor and one liners, making all who knew him feel they were part of the family.
Visiting hours are from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Riewerts Memorial Home, 187 S. Washington Ave., Bergenfield. All are welcome to gather at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home for a 10 a.m. funeral Mass at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church, Bergenfield. Cremation will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.
