New Jersey's claim to some of the cheapest gas prices in the country could be history this weekend if the state Senate follows the Assembly in approving a 23-cent per gallon tax hike.

The 11 percent increase -- approved by Assembly members by a 53-23 vote on Tuesday -- is aimed at helping replenish the state's depleted transportation fund, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The measure will also cut the sales tax from 7 percent to 6 percent.

The state Senate is expected to adopt the bill on Thursday.

Gov. Christie could then immediately sign it into law.

Christie, who has supposed the gas tax increase, focused on the sales tax cut. He thanked the Assembly members, who he said "heeded my suggestion for tax fairness, which I have been calling for for a long time."

"This is the first broad-based tax cut for all New Jerseyans since 1994," the statement said. "It is much-needed while at the same time we are going to have constitutionally-dedicated revenue to improve roads, bridges and the mass transit systems in the state."
