Rebecca Wilson got the idea for "The New Place" after years of babysitting her nephew, who is high-functioning, and working with children who have Asperger Syndrome.
"I've seen the terror that some for these kids on spectrum can have over any new experience," the author said, "and it’s sad."
Wilson, who self-published the book, photographed her two sons on airplanes, in hotel rooms and cars.
She paired the pictures with simple text and likened the simplistic flip-book to a "social story" — a learning tool to help parents with children on the spectrum.
We see the airplane we will fly on to get to the new place. I am excited and a little nervous but I stay calm.
Wilson has a young adult novel in the works but is hoping "The New Place" will make a difference for someone, somewhere.
"If it makes kids feel better," she said, "then that's all I want."
