Same-Day Surgery: When Is It Right For You?

“Same-day” has become a buzz word for hip and knee replacement surgery — but what does it really mean? What’s the advantage? And who is a candidate?

Outpatient, or same-day surgery, entails a more rapid recovery where you can be discharged on the same day of surgery. Improved technology and more consistent ways to minimize pain after surgery have enabled same-day discharge for certain patients.

The advantages of same-day hip and knee replacement surgery include a lower risk of infection, more rapid return to normal activities and a higher rate of patient satisfaction. Outpatient surgery patients undergo specialized education, are up and walking right after surgery and even go up and down stairs within a few hours. Recovering in your home environment, including sleeping in your own bed that night, has been shown to lead to higher patient satisfaction.

With respect to who is a candidate, if you are otherwise healthy, do not smoke, live at home with another person for support after surgery and are motivated to get back to your life quickly, then you are likely a good candidate for same-day discharge. Your anatomy and the complexity of your problem should also be considered. It is always important to discuss your unique situation with a qualified, specialty-trained orthopedic surgeon.

We at HSS are proud to offer rapid recovery and same-day joint replacement specialists at our main hospital campus in New York City as well as each of our regional outpatient offices, including Paramus, New Jersey. We welcome you to come see one of our specialists and find out if you are a candidate for this state-of-the-art surgical experience. One of our patients, Sue, always loves to share how happy patients can be after same-day discharge knee replacement surgery.

“I felt that I would have a stronger recovery in my own home, but it was so much better than I even expected. With the help of a terrific staff and a good support system at home, I became mobile very quickly,” said Sue.

“My advice to potential patients is make sure that you are prepared at home – both with family and friends you can lean on and the actual tools you need to recover. Don’t be afraid to go home on the same day, it encourages you to begin your personal recovery sooner,” she added.
