Free Wi-Fi will be available exclusively to AAdvantage members beginning in January 2026, American announced in a news release on Tuesday, April 15. The service will cover more planes than any other domestic carrier, according to the Dallas-based airline.
American is partnering with AT&T to offer free internet connections.
"Our customers greatly value staying connected while in the air, whether communicating with friends, getting work done, checking in on social media or streaming their favorite subscription services," said Heather Garboden, American's chief customer officer. "We've been working diligently to outfit our aircraft with best-in-class high-speed Wi-Fi and, together with AT&T, are proud to offer those services at no cost to our most loyal customers."
The free service will work on about 90% of American's fleet, using Viasat and Intelsat satellite technology. The airline plans to install high-speed Wi-Fi on more than 500 regional airplanes by the end of 2025.
American's announcement comes as the airline tries to compete with other carriers that offer free inflight internet.
JetBlue Airways has provided free Wi-Fi for all passengers since 2013. Delta Air Lines offers free Wi-Fi for SkyMiles members on most domestic flights.
United Airlines plans to roll out free Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members by the end of 2025 through SpaceX's Starlink network. Southwest Airlines passengers can purchase internet for $8 per device from takeoff to landing, while "A-List" preferred members and business select customers receive it for free.
AT&T executive Jenifer Robertson said the partnership with American reflects the growing demand for constant connection.
"Whether it’s staying in touch with those who matter most, following a favorite sports team, or catching up on that show everyone is talking about, connectivity brings people a world of possibilities," said Robertson. "By advancing connectivity, everything becomes more immediate and accessible anywhere they go. We are proud to partner with American Airlines to connect people to what matters most to them – even in the sky."
Inflight Wi-Fi typically costs $10 to $29 on American, with the airline also offering monthly subscriptions that start at $49.95.
