The collision happened around 11:10 a.m. according to New Milford PD Sgt. Michael Lafrano.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the BMW, driven by a New Milford resident, was struck by a garbage truck traveling north on Trenton Street, Lafrano said. A witness told police the truck driver did not make a complete stop at a stop sign before the impact.
There were no reported injuries among those in the garbage truck, but the BMW driver sustained a minor arm injury and was taken to Holy Name Hospital by Holy Name EMS, police said.
When New Milford Fire Department crews arrived on scene, they found the BMW wedged beneath the truck’s battery compartment, with sparks coming from one of the truck’s batteries, officials said.
Unit 39 was first on scene, followed by Engine 34, which assumed command. Firefighters confirmed a fluid spill was antifreeze, not fuel, and worked with a tow company to shift the BMW just enough to access and safely secure the truck’s sparking batteries, the department said.
Absorbent material was used to treat the antifreeze, and the scene was handed back to police.
The BMW was towed by All Points, while the garbage truck was removed by Tumino’s, police said.
The crash remains under investigation and no summonses have been issued at this time, according to Sgt. Lafrano. Fire officials said the scene was cleared after approximately 60 minutes.
