Cat 5 Melissa's 185 MPH Winds At Landfall Make It One Of Most Powerful Atlantic Storms Ever
Hurricane Melissa, a catastrophic Category 5 storm, has just made landfall in western Jamaica as one of the strongest storms in history. It's expected to leave behind unprecedented destruction and threatening lives across the island. With winds near 200 mph, storm surge as high as 18 feet, and rainfall of 3 feet or more, the slow-moving monster will become the strongest storm to ever strike Jamaica in recorded history, the most potent storm of the 2025 hurricane season, and one of the strongest to ever hit the Atlantic basic. Melissa, moving northeast at just 9 mph, made landfall at around…

Coastal Concerns Grow As Atlantic Tropical Activity Ramps Up
The Atlantic hurricane season is ramping up, and forecasters are urging caution as several areas of tropical activity could impact the US Southeast and the Caribbean in the coming days. “The tropics were unusually quiet last August and into the start of September," AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva. "The activity we’re seeing in the Atlantic basin right now is typical, not unusual. Every season is different." From Friday, Aug. 8 to Sunday, Aug. 10, meteorologists are closely monitoring conditions near the Southeast coast, where a medium risk of tropical development could b…

New Tropical Risk Areas Emerge In Atlantic
Forecasters are watching two potential trouble spots in the Atlantic basin for signs of tropical development heading into mid-July. According to AccuWeather, environmental conditions may support limited tropical activity in two areas — one in the western Atlantic, the other farther east — between Tuesday, July 15 and Friday, July 18. Where a system forms could affect where it goes: If development occurs on the Atlantic side of Florida, it could trend north toward the Southeast coast. If it forms on the Gulf side, movement may steer west along the northern Gulf coast. Even without an organ…

Atlantic Storm Could Be Coming Right After Hurricane Season Starts: Here's Latest
There could be tropical development in the Atlantic just days after the 2025 hurricane season started, forecasters say. The window for activity will be during the second week of the month, and there could be some impact in the United States as a result, AccuWeather meteorologists say. The Atlantic hurricane season, which started on Sunday, June 1, lasts through Sunday, Nov. 30. Over the next week to 10 days, moist and dry air masses will alternate over the Caribbean and extend as far north as the waters off Florida in both the Gulf and Atlantic, says AccuWeather. "This pulse will be…

Here's Why This Year’s Atlantic Hurricane Season Could Be Busy One
With the start of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season a week away, federal forecasters have just released their long-range outlook. The season starts on Sunday, June 1, and runs through Sunday, Nov. 30. The outlook by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) includes a range of 13 to 19 named storms. Of those, six to 10 could strengthen into hurricanes, and between three and five may reach major hurricane status, with winds of 111 mph or higher. Forecasters say they have 70 percent confidence in those projections. A combination of warmer ocean tempe…

Newly-Formed Tropical System In Atlantic Expected To Become Hurricane
A new system that formed in the Atlantic basin is expected to strengthen to tropical storm status before possibly becoming the first hurricane of the 2023 season. Tropical Depression 3, which developed on Monday, June 19 in the central Atlantic, is expected to continue to move toward the west for the next several days, according to the National Hurricane Center. "The system should be approaching the Lesser Antilles late this week," said the hurricane center. "Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast, and the depression is forecast to be…

Areas Of Interest In Atlantic Being Monitored As Hurricane Season Nears Final Month
Multiple areas of interest in the Atlantic basin are being closely monitored by forecasters as the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season nears its final month. Lisa is the next name on the list that meteorologists are using to name tropical storms for the hurricane season, which ends on Wednesday, Nov. 30. Showers and thunderstorms have decreased in association with a well-defined area of low pressure located just west-northwest of Bermuda, the NOAA National Hurricane Center said on Tuesday, Oct. 25. AccuWeather.com is referring to the system as a tropical rainstorm and said it is lik…
