Hatfield School Superintendent Martin McEvoy announced this week that he will be stepping away from the district as of Wednesday, June 30 after a year and a half of navigating the district through the COVID-19 crisis.
McEvoy was appointed by the School Committee slightly more than a year ago, in March 2020, right as the pandemic was hitting the East Coast hardest. He took over for former Superintendent John Robert, who retired last July after a decade running the district, which includes a pair of schools.
According to McEvoy, he plans to pursue professional opportunities in both learning and teaching that will allow him to work more closely with other educators and students while remaining close to his Berkshire County home and family.
“I am grateful to the School Committee for hiring me and to the students, staff, and entire community who worked so hard during this difficult pandemic year,” McEvoy wrote in a message to the community. “I wish everyone the very best as the district moves forward into the future.
“The district remains solid, and I will finish my time at the HPS strong.”
Prior to his time at Hatfield, McEvoy was an administrator at the Herberg Middle School in Pittsfield, and he also served in differing capacities at the Lanesborough Elementary School, Hoosac Valley Middle, and High School in Cheshire.
With McEvoy’s resignation accepted by the School Committee, they will meet on Monday, April 12 to begin a search for his replacement, who they hope to have in place by the beginning of July.
