State Troopers got a call about a single-car spinout crash on I-290 East near Exit 23 in Worcester just before 9 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 22, Massachusetts State Police report.

Moments later, police got another call about a wrong-way driver going west in the same lane heading toward downtown Worcester.

The vehicle, a 2015 Honda Accord sedan, was found minutes later just after Exit 21 where it had crashed head-on into a 2006 Toyota Highlander SUV.

Investigation determined that the Accord was involved in the same spinout crash, then, for reasons still under investigation, started driving the wrong way down I-290, police said.

The driver of the Accord, a 31-year-old man from Marlborough, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Highlander, a 24-year-old man from Worcester, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The victim's identity was not released. The investigation is ongoing
