Chief Special Warfare Operator Michael Ernst died from free fall training accident in Marana, AZ, on Sunday, Feb. 19, a Naval Special Warfare Command (NSW) spokeswoman told Daily Voice.

Ernst, assigned to a Naval Special Warfare East Coast-based unit, was pronounced dead at Banner University Medical Center, the spokeswoman continued. Ernst leaves behind his wife and two children, aged 3 and 5, according to the the Navy SEAL Foundation (NSF).

“Mike was an exceptional teammate," Rear Adm. Keith Davids, commander of the Naval Special Warfare Command said in a statement.

"He was a dedicated NSW Sailor who applied his talents and skills towards some of our nation’s hardest challenges, while selflessly mentoring his teammates," Davids continued. "Mike and his family will always be part of the NSW family, and he will never be forgotten.”

Ernst enlisted in the Navy in August 2009, the Navy Times reports. His accolades include a Silver Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and three Combat Action Ribbons, the outlet continued.

Ernst's death is the fourth Navy training death to happen within 14 months, Military.com reports

"You were kind, and strong, and had the best sense of humor," Gina Leckie, a friend who spent time with Ernst in Massachusetts and Connecticut, said in a Facebook post

"You tolerated my shenanigans and carried me out of bars when it was time to go. You were a protector, a safe space, and real life superhero," Leckie continued. "You were taken too soon and will be missed beyond measure. Rest easy, Ernie."

The NSF is taking donations to support the Ernst family during their time of need. People interested in donating can click here. Meanwhile, the Navy is investigating the incident.
