The Lottery is launching an app this spring that will allow many big winners to claim their prizes and have the winnings deposited directly into their bank accounts, the Lowell Sun reported Tuesday, Nov. 24.

Prizes between $601 and $5,000 could be claimed through the app. Convenience stores will continue to process prizes of $600 and under.

In addition to providing a way to claim prizes, the app will also scan tickets to let people know if they’re holding a winner.

Currently, Massachusetts Lottery Prize players who win big have to claim their winnings in-person at the claims center in Springfield. The center is moving - though not far - to West Springfield, the Lottery announced in early November.

Lottery officials expect the app will reduce trips to the claims center by 78,000 per year.

More details are expected to be released during a press conference Tuesday, Nov. 24.
