When he is not serving with the Groton Fire Department, Wally can be found at the Harvard Fire Department, his parents' tractor shop or working as a certified pyrotechnician.

Unfortunately, Wally was involved in a serious accident while setting up a firework display in North Andover on July 3, according to a GoFundMe organized in his honor.

While putting up the display, the rack Wally was loading unexpectedly ignited. Wally was flown to a Boston hospital where he underwent several surgeries for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries to his upper body.

Wally will likely need more procedures and time to recover, thus taking him away from his multiple positions. Now the community which Wally serves is coming together to help their helper during his time of need.

"Wally is an incredibly hard-worker, family-oriented, selfless and kind," the GoFundMe reads. "We are still unsure of all of the obstacles Wally will face, but we would like to ease any stress for a guy who would help anyone in need."

All proceeds from the campaign will go towards supporting Wally's recovery. The GoFundMe had raised more than $45,900 of its $50,000 goal as of Thursday, July 7. People can donate by clicking here
