The incident took place on Thursday, Jan. 20, near Meredith Street in Springfield.

Officers of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit were conducting surveillance on Eldridge Street when several individuals walked out of a home, including the person officers were investigating, according to Springfield Police spokesperson Ryan Walsh.

The group walked down the street towards Meredith Street when the teen pulled out a handgun and fired two shots, Walsh said.

No one was hit.

The shots activated the city’s ShotSpotter system and additional officers were sent to assist.

Detectives pursued the group and after a short foot pursuit caught up with the 16-year-old suspect on Pomona Street and placed him under arrest.

The firearm was recovered, Walsh said.

Around 7 p.m., detectives executed a search warrant at the Eldridge Street home where a magazine holding 10 rounds was seized, Walsh added.

The teen is facing several firearms charges.

His identity will not be released due to his age, Walsh said.
