The Spirit of Springfield announced that the massive breakfast, which was scheduled to be held in mid-May, will now be held in the heart of Main Street on Saturday, Aug. 21 as it sets a new date.

Officials announced the new date this week after being forced to cancel the popular event in 2020 due to the pandemic.

“The World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast” has been a popular annual local tradition in Springfield since it was introduced 35 years ago as the city celebrated the 350th anniversary of its founding.

At the breakfast, pancakes, bacon, milk, juice, and coffee will be included in the event, which is one of the largest in Springfield each year.

Officials said that in 1976, Springfield was celebrating the country’s bicentennial and decided to throw a breakfast on Main Street.

Ten years later, when the city was celebrating its 350th anniversary, another breakfast bash was thrown and there began a friendly competition with Battle Creek, Michigan, the self-proclaimed “Cereal Capital.”

Each year, the two communities battled it out for the title of “World’s Largest Breakfast,” with the focus initially on the length of the breakfast table before transitioning to the number of servings in the 1980s before Battle Creek bowed out of the competition.

“(Since 1987), the table got shorter and the focus was on servings until recent years when Battle Creek decided not to release the number of bowls they dished out,” officials said.
