Sweetgreen, a California-headquartered restaurant chain with eateries in 19 states, plans to use robots to assemble meals at all of its locations within five years, as reported by Restaurant Business.

The brand opened its first restaurant powered by automation, called the sweetgreen Infinite Kitchen, in Naperville, Illinois on May 10, 2023, according to a press release

The brand acquired Spyce, a Boston-based restaurant company powered by automation, in 2021 and spent a year and a half fine-tuning its technology to create a "frictionless" experience for diners.

At Infinite Kitchen, automated technology dispenses greens, adds dressing, and evenly disperses ingredients. Human employees then add the "final touches," like adding fresh herbs or avocado slices.

The automated tech also includes a "host" position that greets guests and can take their orders. Diners can also place orders through self-service kiosks or via their phones.

The chain has 22 Eastern Massachusetts locations, according to its website, including one location set to open soon in Peabody.
