Christopher Davis, age 42, died while off-duty while at his Brockton home around 9:45 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31, McNamara said. Davis was a 17-year-old veteran with the department.

"Officer Davis's kindness, bravery, dedication and devotion to his family, friends, the men and women of the Stoughton Police Department and the Stoughton community will be greatly missed," McNamara said. "Please keep his family, friends and the members of the Stoughton Police Department in your thoughts and prayers during this extremely difficult time."

Officer Davis spent most of his police career covering the overnight shift before switching to the day shift last year, McNamara said. He was also a member of SPD's Special Operations Unit and served as a certified arson investigator since 2011.

Among his "numerous commendations," Officer Davis received a Distinguished Service Award in 2012, McNamara added.

Davis leaves behind daughter, fiancé, mother, brother, niece and grandchildren. Information about his memorial service has yet to be released.
