One of the biggest events of the year in Worcester County is the St. Patrick's Day Parade, which will be held Sunday, March 12.

If you plan on attending, here are some things you should know, according to the parade's official website. 

  • The parade starts at noon and runs between one and a half to two hours. 
  • The parade will snake its way down 2.1 miles of Park Avenue — from Highland to Elm streets, which means drivers must seek different routes from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. 
  • Parking will be allowed on side streets, but do not block fire hydrants, driveways, or other roadways.
  • A shuttle will run from the Doherty High School parking lot every 20 minutes between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The shuttle will drop off at Our Lady of Mercy on June Street and Mill Swan School on Mill Street.
  • If you can't make the parade, it will be live broadcast on Spectrum at 12:30 on Sunday, with replays to follow on Friday and March 19. 

To accommodate the noontime parade and the 11 a.m. Guinness Celtic 5K, police have issued a list of detours drivers should know if they plan to navigate the city on Sunday. 

  • Leading up to the race, police will detour drivers traveling North on Park Ave onto Elm Street, where they'll be directed around the park to reenter Park Ave. Southbound traffic will also be redirected around the park to reenter Park Avenue at Elm Street.
  • At 10 a.m. Elm Street will be closed from Russell Street to Park Avenue.
  • There will be intermittent traffic flow east to west across Park Avenue when possible (Pleasant St, Chandler St, etc.). However, drivers must seek alternative routes during the parade.

Worcester police will also up their presence in and around the parade and race routes, with officers monitoring several cameras covering the area. 

The Worcester Police Department is making the following preparations for this event to ensure that spectators have a safe and enjoyable time. Massachusetts State Police bomb and explosive dogs will patrol the area as well.
