“The Enfield Police Department wishes to stress that action such as this is taken only under extraordinary circumstances,” police said.

On Tuesday, at around 4:30 p.m. police responded to a call for help on Spring Street in Enfield. Once there, Enfield Police said they saw a large dog, a pit bull, attacking a woman.

An officer went to help the woman whose foot was allegedly being bitten by the dog. He noticed lacerations/tissue damage to her foot, police said.

The dog’s owners were able to briefly stop the attack by pouring hot water on it, police said, but the dog then allegedly lunged for the victim’s neck and bit her. The dog pulled her from the sidewalk to the front yard of a home.

At this time, an officer shot the dog.

“The officer then dispatched the dog, thus avoiding further injury to the woman,” police said.

The victim, whose name was not released, was treated by emergency responders, police said.

“This outcome, while unfortunate, appears to have been unavoidable in an effort to protect the female victim from any further harm or additional injury,” police said.

A supervisory review of the incident is ongoing, police said. It is common for police departments to review an incident in which an officer discharges a weapon in the line of duty.
