Derek Wayne Webb, 30, had cut off his parole monitoring bracelet, and officers went to find him on Wednesday, Feb. 22, West Springfield police. Their search led them to a motel room at the Springfield Inn at 1573 Riverdale Street.

Police knocked on the door, but the woman who answered said Webb wasn't there. She added that they should end their search because "Derek is too smart for you guys to catch," West Springfield police said.

They didn't.

Police left the motel, but one officer, who had remained in a nearby parking lot in case Webb returned, soon saw the man run behind the building in just his boxers and jump through the room's window. Investigators went back to the inn, where the so-called genius immediately surrendered to them.

Police arrested Webb on the outstanding charges of manslaughter and distributing a Class A drug, officials said.
