Matthew Rizzo assumed ownership of Danger when his neighbor and US Army Captain got deployed for a whole year, according to a GoFundMe campaign created by Rizzo.
Rizzo, who would occasionally watch Danger, said he became "completely obsessed" with the pooch after taking him in for two weeks. Rizzo said this was a decision that saved his life.
"Danger's real superpower is how you can feel his love," Rizzo wrote. "They say all dog's love is unconditional, which Dangers certainly is, but his love felt deeper than anything I had ever known."
Unfortunately, Danger has a mass in his spleen that needs to be removed as soon as possible, Rizzo wrote on the GoFundMe page. The surgery could keep Danger alive anywhere from four months to a few years depending on whether the mass is cancerous.
Danger has been there for Rizzo as he transitioned from military to civilian life, when his mother died, after his athletic dreams ended because of a knee injury and even during his divorce.
