A Hagerstown woman going only by the name “Happy Dog Groomer” is giving credit to her late father and “a penny from heaven” that she found sitting on her steps after claiming a $100 prize on a separate ticket sold in May.

The Washington County woman said that she was going hold off on claiming her initial prize when she came across the heads-up penny and thought it could be a good luck sign.

“The penny was laying heads up,” she said. “That means it is a lucky penny.”

Using her winnings, “Happy Dog Groomer” chose to pick up a $30 “Cash Is King” scratcher at Hub City Liquor in Hagerstown. She said she was going to use any old coin to play the ticket, but then caught herself and remembered the penny.

“I almost forgot to use my penny,” she explained. “I had to stop scratching with that quarter and grabbed my lucky penny.”

Her superstition paid off, and sure enough the penny helped lead to a $2 million top-prize.

According to Maryland Lottery officials, “Happy Dog Groomer” was joined by her sister in the Winners Circle, where the two explained that her late father was an avid player, and he had a goal to win enough money to take care of his family.

She said that she plans to share some of the prize with her family to honor that dream for him, though she might spoil herself with a new house and car.

“We knew it was a penny from heaven” she said.

This is the third top prize winning “Cash Is King” game, with two more $2 million tickets unclaimed. There are also four $50,000 prizes and others ranging from between $30 and $10,000.
