'Dazzling Array': 161 Whales, Including 7 Different Species, Spotted Off Mass Coast
It’s a whale of a tale and researchers have the pictures to prove it.
A recent aerial survey conducted by the Northeast Fisheries Science Center came across a jaw-dropping 161 whales in the waters south of Martha’s Vineyard and southeast of Nantucket.
The stunning display was comprised of seven different whale species, including 93 sei, 36 humpback, 21 fin, as well as minke, sperm, and North Atlantic right whales.
Researchers also spotted two Orcas, also known as killer whales, one of whom was seen chowing down on a tuna.

A 28-year-old from out of state has died in a car crash that occurred on Martha's Vineyard, authorities said.
Micah P. Anderson, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, was killed in a single-vehicle crash that occurred in Oak Bluffs around 12:49 a.m. on Wednesday, June 22, Massachusetts State Police said.
His passenger, a 46-year-old man from Spencer in Worcester County, was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston with serious injuries, according to police.

A cyberattack on the Steamship Authority of Massachusetts threw the company’s ferry schedules for a loop as officials scrambled to combat the ransomware attack.
The company, which operates the largest ferry service to the islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, was targeted by hackers on Wednesday morning, June 2, causing delays for some travelers.
