No Jail Time For Ex-Mass. Officer Who Punched Handcuffed Man 13 Times: Feds
A former Weymouth police officer who was caught on video camera beating a handcuffed suspect will not serve any jail time, federal authorities said. Justin Chappell, 43, was sentenced to two years of supervised release, with the first six months to be spent under house arrest, the US Attorney for Massachusetts said on Tuesday, July 16. He must also complete 40 hours of community service each year of his supervised release. Six Hampden County eighth-grade students have been charged in juvenile court after chat logs were discovered where they made threats against minority students, used racist slurs, shared racist memes and comments, and held a mock "slave auction" for two black classmates, authorities said. A 29-year-old Boston man faces civil rights and assault charges after authorities said he attacked a caused a man head injuries during a beating earlier this month at an MBTA station. Aiyoub Alsallak is accused of shouting homophobic slurs at two men at Andrew Station platform on Sept. 5 just before 9 p.m., the Suffolk County District Attorney's office said. Woman Who Gave Birth In Prison Toilet Reaches Settlement In Civil Rights Lawsuit
A woman who delivered her baby into a prison cell toilet bowl has reached a settlement with the state of Connecticut. An award of $250,000 will be split three ways: a third of the money will go to the woman’s lawyer, about $112,000 goes to the baby, and the rest of the money will be given to the mother once she has served her sentence, according to the Associated Press.
