CT Man Left Wrecked Car On I-84 In West Hartford, Drove Away In Another Vehicle: Police

A Connecticut man was arrested this week after police say he crashed his car on I-84, left it on the highway, then jumped into another vehicle and sped away. Unfortunately for him, all of this was captured on a Department of Transportation camera, authorities said.

Chaviel Gonzalez, 21, of Hartford, was arrested Tuesday morning, March 11, and charged with operating an unregistered motor vehicle, misuse of a registration plate, illegal operation without insurance, evading responsibility, and interfering with an officer, Connecticut State Police said.

The chaos unfolded around 6:42 a.m. near Exit 40 on I-84 West in West Hartford when police received multiple 911 calls about a crashed Honda Accord sitting sideways and blocking the right lane.

Before police arrived, another vehicle, an Acura TSX, pulled up next to the crashed Honda. Dispatchers watched as the driver of the Honda climbed into the Acura before it drove away, leaving the damaged Honda abandoned in the roadway, authorities said.

Troopers quickly located and stopped the fleeing Acura a short distance away. The driver, identified as Gonzalez, initially denied being involved in a crash. But when confronted with the evidence, he admitted to being behind the wheel and leaving the scene, police said.

Further investigation revealed both the Honda and the Acura were unregistered, uninsured, and had misused registration plates. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

He was released on a $2,500 bond, police said.
