FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. Youth football players will compete in three championship games Saturday as the Fairfield County Football League season comes to a close.
Fairfield Blue meets Darien White in the seventh-grade championship game at Darien High School at 10:30 a.m. At New Canaans Dunning Stadium, the fifth grade championship game features New Canaan Red against Wilton Blue. Fairfield Ludlowe High School hosts the sixth grade championship game between Fairfield Red and Wilton Black at 6:30 p.m.
The seventh grade championship is rematch of game played on Sept. 4, the first week of the season. Darien White won that one, 14-6. Fairfield Blue, seeded fifth, went 5-2-1 during the regular season. It beat previously unbeaten Darien Blue, 18-13, to reach the title game.
No. 2 seed Darien White (10-0) defeated Ridgefield Orange, 26-12, to reach the championship game. Darien, coached by Rich Joyce, did not allow more than one touchdown in any regular season game this year, outscoring opponents 225-71.
Wilton Blue, the No. 3 seed, has not allowed a point in its two playoff victories. Wilton Blue topped No. 7 Darien Blue, 12-0, in the semifinals. Wilton, coached by Bill Ronk, went 7-1 during the regular season. Top-seeded New Canaan (10-0) beat the Darien Wave, 28-14, in the semifinals. New Canaan is coached by Patrick OConnell.
Fairfield Red earned the No. 1 seed in the sixth-grade bracket. Red has posted four straight shutouts, and allowed just 12 points all year en route to a 9-1 record. Its only loss came to Saturdays opponent, Wilton Black, the No. 2 seed. Wilton defeated Fairfield, 6-0, on Oct. 9. Wilton defeated Westport North, 14-0, in the semifinals.
Wiltons teams are looking to add to an already impressive tournament. Wilton teams shared the title in the third- and fourth-grade divisions. Darien teams shared the eighth grade crown. Last year, New Canaan won three of the six age groups.
