Wilton Rowers Help Norwalk Team Win 6 Events In First Fall Regatta

WILTON, Conn. -- Rowers from Wilton helped the Norwalk River Rowing Association start its fall season in style with six first-place finishes at the Head of the Merrimack regatta last weekend in Massachusetts.

Norwalk River Rowing added five second-place finishes and one third.

Wilton residents Joe Blake, Luke Goodwin and James Koenigsberg (with Wilton resident Patrick Lyon at coxswain) helped Norwalk River Rowing take second place in the boys varsity eight race. Blake, Goodwin, Koenigsberg and Lyon were also in a boys varsity lightweight four that took first.

Wilton’s Jack Kaelin, Ryan Cunningham and Ryan Solecki were in another boys varsity lightweight four that took second. Jack McDermott was in a boys varsity quad that took first place, while Stefan Klink and Jack Kaelin were in a boys varsity quad that took second place. Greg Bauerfeld contributed a second place in the boys varsity single event.

In the girls races, Wilton residents Lauren Safko and Shannon O’Hara rowed in the girls varsity quad that took first. Safko and Callie McCool rowed in a girls varsity four that took second, while Lindsay Clark and Rachel Pak rowed in a girls varsity lightweight four that took first place.

Other events where Norwalk took a first were the boys varsity double and the boys varsity lightweight double, while Norwalk’s third place also came in the varsity lightweight double event.

Twenty-seven clubs and high schools entered 153 boats in 33 events at the Head of the Merrimack, a 3.8 mile race on the Merrimack River in Methuen, Mass.  Norwalk River Rowing’s next regatta is the Head of the Riverfront in Hartford on Sunday.
