WILTON, Conn. This time, the runs came a little later than usual for Wilton Little League. But when they struck, they struck big.
Wilton Little League used a six-run burst in the fourth inning, getting plenty of cushion as the team defeated National Lione of Stamford, 11-3, on Friday night to win the District 1 championship.
Wilton pitcher Billy Black went all the way, giving up three runs over six innings. He also provided two hits, including a two-run home run during the big six-run fourth inning.
We just put the bat on the ball and thats it, Black said. Its like contagious. Once one kid gets a hit, then everyone starts hitting."
Wilton struck for two runs in the first inning, courtesy of a two-run home run by Dillon Lifrieri. Wilton added another run in the third on Lifrieris RBI single that drove home Henry Strmecki. Wilton had the bases loaded after that in the third but couldnt push any more across the plate until an inning later.
Lione struck back, getting a run in the bottom of the fourth and two in the bottom of the fifth but couldnt get closer. Wilton added two more in the sixth for good measure, and the team celebrated after a double play closed the game.
Wilton Coach Kevin Black said Fridays win is more fun than Disney World. At no point did he feel Lione was out of the running, Black said. They stung a lot of balls tonight that got caught that could have made this a different game, he added.
Wilton now moves on to the Section 1 tournament, where it expects to meet up against Fairfield American, the club Kevin Black calls the gold standard for local Little League.
