WILTON, Conn. Scrimmages are over and the fall sports season begins for real, as Wilton High School athletic teams play their first games on Tuesday. Other opening games continue throughout the week.
Below is the schedule of season openers for fall sports teams at Wilton High.
Tuesday, Sept. 11
The defending Class M state champion field hockey team gets its 2012 season underway at home, taking on Trumbull at 4 p.m. Wilton had a dream season last year, going 14-2 in the regular season, defeating perennial powerhouse Darien in the state semifinals and winning its first state title since 2006 and third in program history.
The boys and girls cross country teams travel to Staples for their first meet of the season at 4 p.m. The Warriors take on the Wreckers, Trinity Catholic and Bassick in a multi-team meet. The girls team is the defending Class L state champions.
Wednesday, Sept. 12
The girls soccer team hosts Darien at 4 p.m. to start its season. The Warriors went 8-3-5 last year, reaching the second round of the Class L state tournament.
The defending Class M state champion girls swimming and diving team hosts Trumbull at the Wilton Y for its first meet of the season. The Warriors get their season under way at 3:40 p.m.
The girls volleyball team hosts Trinity Catholic at 5:30 p.m. in the Wilton High Field House to start its season. The Warriors went 5-13 last year.
Thursday, Sept. 13
The boys soccer team opens its season at home against Greenwich at 5 p.m. Wilton went 9-5-2 last year and took top-ranked Wethersfield to a penalty kick shootout in the Class L state tournament.
Friday, Sept. 14
The Wilton High football team travels to Bridgeport Central for a 7 p.m. game to open its season. Wilton earned its first winning season since 2004, going 6-4.
