WILTON, Conn. With all the regular season and conference success the Wilton High girls lacrosse team has had, it can be easy to forget that the Warriors have only one state title to their name. That came in 2004, the first year girls lacrosse was recognized as a varsity sport in Connecticut.
Wilton will have a chance to add to the trophy case when it battles top-ranked New Canaan in the Class M state championship Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bunnell High School in Stratford.
The Warriors were denied their third straight conference title after falling in heartbreaking fashion to Greenwich in the semifinals. The Warriors have crushed the competition since then, however, outscoring opponents 52-13 in the first three rounds of the state tournament. In their only meeting of the year, Wilton fell to New Canaan, 13-10, in its regular season finale.
Wilton was 13-3 in the regular season and is ranked third in the tournament.
