WILTON, Conn. A strong season for the Wilton fifth-grade boys basketball team ended Sunday with a 49-33 loss to St. Theresa of Trumbull in the semifinals of the A Division of the Fairfield County Basketball League playoffs.
Wilton, sponsored by Pinocchio Pizza, finished the season 17-11 under coaches James Bargon and Bill Farmakis.
Wilton advanced to the semifinals with a 25-24 win over Greenwich in the quarterfinals.
St. Theresas opened the semifinals with a 7-0 run to take control. Zachary Pozzi (seven points) put Wilton on the board with two quick layups. Richard Nolan (two points), Billy Ronk (two points) and Tyler Previte all hustled defensively to keep the game close. Cole Barnes and Zach Dedrick applied pressure from the guard positions, and Wilton trailed by just five at half. St. Theresas went on a 12-0 run early in the third quarter. Wilton played St Theresas even the remainder of the game.
Brendan Connor (seven points) and Ryan Schriber (six points) also played well offensively, and Zayvion Eusebe (three points) did a nice job on both ends of the court. Kyle Phillips (six points) turned in a solid overall performance. Wilton turned up its defense in the fourth quarter but could not dent St. Theresas lead.
In a quarterfinal win over Greenwich, Wilton trailed 22-21 when Eusebe (four points) hit two free throws to put his team ahead. Greenwich went ahead again on a long jumper with seven seconds remaining.
Eusebe passed to Kyle Phillips (two points, two rebounds) who quickly turned and passed to Zachary Pozzi (10 points) near half court. Pozzi took off to the basket for a hard layup against a Greenwich defender and scored at the buzzer for the win.
Greenwich went 17-7 on the season and was 10-1 in its division of the league. Wilton handed Greenwich its only league loss during the regular season, 35-33, on Feb. 11.
