WILTON, Conn. - The Wilton fifth-grade girls' travel basketball team capped its Cinderella run in the playoffs Sunday by beating New Canaan in the A division championship game, 19-16.
The first half was a great display of teamwork as Wiltons defense was in full gear. Alex Greer, Caroline Troy and Olivia Deter kept up a sharp pace, giving New Canaan very little room to execute. Wilton held New Canaan to just six points in the first half.
Wilton came out strong in the third quarter with timely picks set by Hannah Belanger and spot-on rebounding by Caroline Coffey. Sophia Strazza led the Wilton offense with eight points, while Kaitlin Reif added six points. Cate McCabe and Bridgette Wall led the team in assists, feeding the high scorers.
Wilton extended its lead against New Canaan to six, but New Canaan started to come back. Wiltons Maddie Burke came up with a crucial late block to keep New Canaan at bay.
The team finished its championship season with a 9-16 overall record.
