WILTON, Conn. -- The Wilton Blue fifth-grade boys lacrosse team played tough but dropped a doubleheader against teams from New Canaan.
New Canaan Red won the opener, 12-3. Trailing 2-0, Tyler Previte scored for Wilton on a terrific pass from Patrick Ciquera. Outstanding goaltending from Andrew Calabrese and tenacious defense from Aaron Kleeman, Drew Herlyn, and Joey Seaman kept Wilton in the game for much of the first half. Despite strong play from Liam Sullivan, Jack Caty, and Jack Ferguson, New Canaan finally broke through with four unanswered goals.
Wilton kept fighting, with Ciquera scoring and the half ended 7-2. Billy Ronk scored the first goal of the second half for Wilton, and Seaman rifled one off the post, but it was all New Canaan after that.
New Canaan Black edged Wilton, 8-5. Wilton jumped out to an early lead on a goal by Patrick Ciquera with a beautiful assist by Max Colburn. Tyler Previte added another goal for Wilton, but New Canaan fought back.
Tyler Zengo, Kyle Brody, Evan Harley, and Isaac Dierks hustled throughout the afternoon, but Wilton couldn't find the net and was down 6-2.
Wilton's defense behind Ronk, Herlyn, and goaltender Calabrese was solid in the second half, and finally Thomas Costello scored on an assist from Ciquera to get Wilton back on track. Ciquera scored again on a great pass from Cole Barnes to cut the lead to 7-4. Previte would add another goal for Wilton, but it could not pull closer.
Wilton meets Stamford on Friday at Boyle Stadium.
