WILTON, Conn. Wiltons Alex Ward won the long jump and sprinter Brynn Parsons took second in two events to lead performances by Warrior athletes at Tuesdays Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference track and field championships at Danbury High School.
Wiltons girls finished eighth with 38.5 points, while the boys took fifth with 55. Darien won the girls team title with 115, and Staples won the boys with 147.5. The Wreckers ended Danburys 11-year run as league champions.
Ward won the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 10 inches. Teammate Devin Quirk took second, just a half-inch behind. Freshman Spencer Brown had one of the most impressive performances on the track, taking sixth in the mile in 4:26.39. Staples Henry Wynne won with a time of 4:14.3 in a swift championship race.
Matt Caswell was eighth in the 800, and Quirk took fourth in the 300. Wilton also took second in the 4 x 100 with Matt Martinelli, Ward, Quirk and Wes Shipp. In the high jump, Shipp took second, and Martinelli was sixth in the triple jump. Marko Piedmont was fifth in the discus and eighth in the shot put.
Parsons ran 12.51 in the finals of the 100, which was won by Brien McMahons Shelly Lindo in 12.24. Lindo also won the 200 in 24.83, with Parsons second in 25.86. Parsons also anchored the winning 4 x 100 relay that also included Taylor Gillespie, Megan Cunningham and Kafesha Thomas.
Alosa Southern was eighth in the 1,600, and Thomas was seventh in the 300. Wilton was eighth in the 4 x 400 and sixth in the 4 x 800. Katie Ward added a fourth-place finish in the high jump, and Meg Hemmerle took eighth in the pole vault. Complete results are available online.
