WILTON, Conn. - The Wilton eighth grade girls travel basketball team split a pair of tough games this past Sunday.
In the first game, Wilton got off to a fast start building a seven-point lead over Monroe. In the end, however, Monroe scored several quick fast break baskets to prevail 39-29.
Sarah Fitzgerald (nine points) and Karen Brosko (eight points) led Wilton's scoring. Christina Holmgren and Claire Graham each added four points. Leigh Culnane scored two, and Maddie Duffy and Zoe Lamason each had one.
The afternoon matchup proved more to Wilton's liking with a convincing 48-39 victory over a scrappy Waterbury team. Brosko paced Wilton with 15 points and Rachel Gordon and Fitzgerald added nine each. Lamason and Holmgren each scored 4 points. Wilton was dominant on the glass, with Holmgren (11 rebounds), Fitzgerald (10 rebounds), Hana Previte (seven rebounds), Lamason (six rebounds) and Culnane adding two points and four rebounds.
Duffy and Macallan Fox contributed with stout defense and two rebounds each. Graham added two points and thre assists, as the team improved to 10-5 overall and 6-3 in the league. Wilton,which is sponsored by Rings End, is in third place entering Saturdays game against New Fairfield.
