WILTON, Conn. The Wilton seventh-grade girls travel basketball team, sponsored by Wilton Bank, won its league quarterfinal game over Newtown on Saturday, 44-34. But the girls fell 38-35 to Bethel in a hard-fought semifinals game.
Caylin Cannavino led the way against Newtown, finishing with a team-high 12 points. Marissa Pucci was close behind with eight points. Ava Martinelli started off Saturday's game with the first basket, kept up a strong defense and led the team in rebounds. She also finished with four points.
Cannavino was the driving offensive force for Wilton again in the semifinals, finishing with 15 points. She cut the Bethel lead to three with a crucial layup late in the game, but Wilton could not close the gap. Pucci finished with 10 points, while Elizabeth Healy added five.
The Wilton seventh-grade girls finish their Fairfield County Basketball League season with a 12-10 record.
