WILTON, Conn. The Wilton sixth grade boys travel basketball team played Brideport-Trumbull in a close game at home on Sunday but came up short, 50-44. Wilton falls to 5-5 on the season.
Brennan Troy (8 points, 3 rebounds) drove to the basket to get Wilton within one point of Bridgeport-Trumbull with one minute remaining in the fourth quarter. Bridgeport-Trumbull held the rebounding advantage, though, and that ultimately allowed them to thwart a final Wilton attempt for the win.
Wilton's Scott Cunningham scored 11 points and hit a key three-pointer to keep the game within reach.
Only a few points separated these teams throughout the game and featured a battle at the boards. Matt Olson (6 points, eight rebounds) played outstanding alongside big man Kyle Shiffrin (5 rebounds) and Max Levi ( 2 rebounds) against a Bridgeport-Trumbull team stacked with taller players. The game came down to offensive rebounds and Bridgeport took advantage of their size.
Super defensive play from Kyle Maatallah (8 points, 4 rebounds) Jack Soucy (3 points, 2 rebounds), Tom Garvey (3 rebounds), and Joe Murtha (2 rebounds ) kept Wilton within striking distance. Wilton ended the 3rd quarter down by only three points, 34-31.
The Wilton sixth grade boys, sponsored by Pain and Spine Specialists of Conn., host Southbury on Saturday at 1 p.m. and travel to Greenwich on Sunday for a 9 a.m. game.
