WILTON, Conn. The Wilton sixth-grade girls travel basketball team continued its winning streak, posting two victories this past weekend. Wilton snuck by Fairfield PAL, 40-38, and muscled out a 39-31 win against a physical and aggressive Norwalk team on the road. The team is sponsored by Dr. Gregory W. Sanford.
Wilton was playing on its home court against Fairfield PAL, and both teams came out strong. With Wilton on top by five at halftime, Coaches Coloney and Melilli huddled with their players, and an aggressive and composed team came to the court and played stellar offense, ending the third up 32-23.
Fairfield was not done, however, as it came all the way back to tie Wilton. In the end, the Warriors were able to capture the lead and win by a bucket. The strong defense of Erin Dellisanti, Alex Hirn, Brenna McPhee and Emma McClintock forced many Fairfield turnovers. The shooters were hot: Thaise Sudano led with 10 points, while Claire Gulbin had nine, Molly Ward seven, Caroline Sweeny six, Emily Tuin four and Lily MacDonald two.
Wilton came prepared for a physical battle against Norwalk after narrowly defeating them earlier this season. The team played determined, unselfish basketball in one of Wiltons best overall performances of the season.
Caroline Sweeny (12 points, four rebounds, two steals) set the tone for the rest of the game. Thaise Sudano pulled down seven crucial rebounds and came up with three steals. Claire Gulbins precision passing was key on offense, and Molly Ward was on fire once again, driving in eight points. Lily MacDonald grabbed three boards and scored four points. Emily Tuin showed defensive and offensive strength with seven points and seven rebounds. In the first half, Emma McClintock took a hard foul that benched her, but she rallied to come back in the fourth, contributing two rebounds and two steals.
The Wilton sixth-grade girls (6-8) face a four-game weekend against Darien YMCA and Westport PAL on Saturday and Westport PAL again on Sunday followed by Ridgefield.
