WILTON, Conn. The Wilton sixth-grade girls' travel basketball team needed a big shot down by two points against Southbury in the B Division championship.
Claire Gulbin provided it, nailing a three-pointer to open the second half and Wilton never looked back.
The Wilton sixth-grade girls went on a 12-2 run in the third quarter and hung on for a 33-28 victory and the tournament championship.
Southbury briefly retook the lead in the fourth quarter, but Thaise Sudano completed a three-point play the old fashioned way, getting fouled and hitting her free throw. Wilton did not relinquish its lead again.
Sudano led the Wilton offense with nine points, while Gulbin and Caroline Sweeny were right behind with eight points each. Emme McClintock had a big day on the boards, leading the team with seven rebounds and also netting four points.
It was a Cinderella run for the Wilton team, who finish the 2011-12 season as league champions despite a 9-14 record on the year.
