Wilton 6 White Football Makes County Finals

WILTON, Conn. — The Wilton 6 White football team will play for the Fairfield County Football League championship after defeating Westport North, 14-0, in the semifinals.

The gritty Wilton team scored a decisive team victory as it dominated a tough Westport team to earn a berth in the championship game. The Warriors' total team effort overwhelmed the Wreckers.

Wilton’s defense, as it has been all season, was flat-out dominant. Defensive ends Brennan Troy, Dominic Romeo, Matt Morello, Jack McErlain, Finn McGovern and Brendan Quinlan were outstanding. They shut down any hopes for sweeps and applied huge hits to the Wrecker quarterback. Romeo and Morello caused fumbles with crushing tackles. The D-Line shut down any inside game as Mikey Wehrli, Kyle Shifrin, Chris Sweeney, Johnny Amato, Nick Rende, Ryan Soltis, Ben Pellicano, Ryan Ettie and Alex Kobsa dominated. Ryan McDermott was all over the field at middle linebacker, causing two fumbles and sacking the quarterback. Linebackers Robbie Hermann and Will Litton repeatedly filled holes and tackled Wrecker runners for losses. Ethan Reichgut and Zach Zeyher played aggressive safeties with many big hits and a Zeyher interception.

The offense was equally strong with two long drives, resulting in a 14-0 lead by the middle of the second quarter. Facing a key third and long on their second drive, quarterback Quinn Schneider rolled left and threw a pass to a leaping Quinlan, who snared it in front of multiple defenders and bulled his way farther downfield. The offensive line of Evan Helman, Trey Snyder, Soltis, Johnny Maggio, Wehrli, Shifrin, Pellicano, Romeo, Ettie, Kobsa and Amato opened holes for Litton, Hermann and Zeyher to churn their way toward the Wrecker end zone. Zeyher rolled right, eluded many would-be tacklers and sprinted down to the Westport 4-yard line. Litton then galloped in for a touchdown and, with Hermann’s kick, Wilton had a 7-0 lead.

Capitalizing on another forced turnover, the offense began eating up yardage and the clock. Runs by Hermann, Troy and Romeo moved the chains; Zeyher took a pitch from Schneider and ran around right end to convert a huge third down, then rolled left and motored to the 4-yard line. McDermott bulled into the end zone. Hermann added another PAT, and the Warriors were in command, 14-0.

The second half saw booming punts by Hermann that pinned Westport deep, gang-tackling by the defense that snuffed out any drives and time-consuming drives by the offense. When Schneider kneeled and the clock expired, the Warriors had a well-deserved semifinal victory.
