WILTON, Conn. The Wilton fifth-grade girls travel basketball team battled two tough opponents over the weekend in the Fairfield County Basketball League.
The Wilton girls, sponsored by Scoops, faced a strong St. Marys squad Saturday. In the first half, Caroline Coffey, Alex Greer and Kaitlin Reif led the offensive attack. Sophia Strazza's strong defensive skills forced many turnovers. During the second half, Wilton put the pressure on with man-to-man defense. Hannah Belanger grabbed a handful of rebounds while Olivia Dexter had an impressive blocked shot. Cate McCabe, Caroline Troy and Bridgette Wall played well for Wilton, but St. Marys prevailed, 25-8.
Against Darien, Wilton started strong from the tip off and had a strong first half. The girls worked hard to get the ball, causing many breakaway opportunities. Strazza, Wall, Belanger and Reif all had multiple steals. Dexter, Greer, Troy, Coffey and McCabe also showed strong defensive skills, including blocked shots. Maddie Burke, nursing an injury, also saw some playing time. Wilton fought hard to the end but came up short, losing to Darien, 26-14.
