Wilton 5th-Grade Boys Win a Pair

WILTON, Conn. – The Wilton fifth-grade boys basketball team picked up a pair of victories over the weekend in the Fairfield County Basketball League. Wilton improved to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the league, where it is tied for second place with Norwalk. Greenwich leads the league with a 6-0 mark.

Wilton, sponsored by Pinocchio Pizza, defeated New Canaan, 39-25, and Mount Vernon, N.Y., 30-27.

Against New Canaan, Zyvion Eusebe scored six points, grabbed six rebounds and had five assists. Zach Pozzi added nine points and six steals, while Brendan Connor had eight points and four steals. Ryan Schriber (eight rebounds), Tyler Previte (seven rebounds), Billy Ronk (six rebounds, three steals) and Richard Nolan (six points, 12 rebounds) also played well.

New Canaan got a boost in the second half from Kyle Phillips (six points, three steals and six rebounds) and Cole Barnes (four points, three steals).

Wilton led 19-10 at halftime after a 7-0 run to take control of the game.

Against Mount Vernon, Eusebe scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds to pace another balanced effort. Phillips (five points, five rebounds, and four steals), Connor (six points and six steals), and Previte (four points and three rebounds) also made solid contributions.

Strong defensive play by Richard Nolan (three rebounds, two steals) and Ryan Schriber (four rebounds) kept the game close going into the fourth quarter. Down the stretch, Connor, Pozzi and Phillips hit key free throws to seal the win for the Warriors.

Wilton faces key battles in its next two games, as it hosts Norwalk on Saturday and meets Greenwich on Jan. 21.
