Two Wilton Wrestlers Win Medals at New Englands

WILTON, Conn. – Wilton wrestlers Hans Forland and Zach Zeyher both took fourth place in the USA Wrestling Kids New England Classic Tournament in Coventry, R.I.

Forland, a seventh-grader, placed third, and Zeyher, a sixth-grader, placed fourth in the USA Wrestling CT Kids State Wrestling Championship in New Haven in February to qualify for the New England meet.

Both boys attend Middlebrook Middle School.

Forland, wrestling in the Middle School 77-pound weight class, won his first bout against a Rhode Island wrestler by a 9-4 decision. Forland lost his second bout to another Rhode Island wrestler by pin late in the third period. Although Forland rebounded to take a win in his third bout (5-2), he suffered a slight injury. After a brief medical check by a tournament EMT, Forland withdrew and forfeited his final match.

Zeyher, wrestling in the Middle School 91-pound weight class, had a tough loss by pin in the semifinals to a Rhode Island wrestler. Zeyher rebounded to pin his next opponent in the consolation semifinals. He wrestled tough but lost 6-0 to another Rhode Island wrestler to receive his fourth-place medal.

Wilton assistant coach Ted Young said, “From a coach's perspective, I was extremely proud of how both boys … regrouped, refocused and rallied to win their consolation semifinal matches. Hans had a very tough, physical bout but prevailed 5-2. And Zach steadily ground down a very solid opponent, who initially was able to keep the match close, though Zach continued to keep the pressure on the boy and ultimately pinned him.”

Wilton Youth Wrestling, now finishing its second season, is run by director and assistant coach Young, head coach Brian McGovern, and assistant coaches Greg Morris and Tom Dexter. Visit wiltonyouthwrestling.org or facebook.com/wywct for more information.
