Sports Writers Honor Fairfield County Standouts

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Soccer legend Kristine Lilly, Trinity Catholic basketball coach Mike Walsh and the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference were honored Sunday at the 71st Gold Key Dinner hosted by the Connecticut Sports Writers’ Alliance. The event at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington.

Lilly, a Wilton native who won two gold medals with the U.S. Olympic team, and Walsh received Gold Keys from the organization. Bacon Academy coach Dave Shea and Trinity College hockey coach John Dunham also received a Gold Keys, which is the highest honor bestowed by the group. The award recognizes the achievements of the state’s finest coaches and athletes.

The FCIAC received the President’s Award, which goes to an individual or organization that has had an impact on Connecticut sports. The league began in 1961 and has been home to some of the state’s best athletes, including NFL Hall of Famer Steve Young of Greenwich, Norwalk basketball legend Calvin Murphy, Lilly and Stamford native Bobby Valentine, the current manager of the Boston Red Sox. League president John Kuczo, vice president Ralph King, Brien McMahon athletic director Joe Madaffari and Fairfield Ludlowe AD Dave Schulz attended the dinner as representatives of the league.

Nearly 200 guests were present. George Albano of The Hour in Norwalk serves as president of the state sports writers group. Walsh was presented by Main Street Connect Sports Editor Tom Renner, and John Nash of the Wilton Villager presented Lilly.
